HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2006 there were 105,000 households in Galveston County. The average household size was 2.6 people.

Families made up 68 percent of the households in Galveston County. This figure includes both married-couple families (51 percent) and other families (17 percent). Nonfamily households made up 32 percent of all households in Galveston County. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2006, Galveston County had a total of 128,000 housing units, 18 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 72 percent was in single-unit structures, 23 percent was in multi-unit structures, and 5 percent was mobile homes. Twenty-seven percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2006, Galveston County had 105,000 occupied housing units - 72,000 (69 percent) owner occupied and 33,000 (31 percent) renter occupied. Six percent of the households did not have telephone service and 6 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Forty-two percent had two vehicles and another 16 percent had three or more.

 
GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: From 2005-2007, 80 percent of the people at least one year old living in Galveston County were living in the same residence one year earlier; 10 percent had moved during the past year from another residence in the same county, 7 percent from another county in the same state, 2 percent from another state, and 1 percent from abroad.

POPULATION OF Galveston County: From 2005-2007, Galveston County had a total population of 280,000 - 143,000 (51 percent) females and 137,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 36.1 years. Twenty-six percent of the population was under 18 years and 11 percent was 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race alone, 76 percent was White; 15 percent was Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent was American Indian and Alaska Native; 3 percent was Asian; less than 0.5 percent was Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 6 percent was Some other race. Two percent reported Two or more races. Twenty percent of the people in Galveston County was Hispanic. Sixty-one percent of the people in Galveston County was White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

EDUCATION: From 2005-2007, 85 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 25 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. Fifteen percent were dropouts; they were not enrolled in school and had not graduated from high school.

The total school enrollment in Galveston County was 78,000 from 2005-2007. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 9,000 and elementary or high school enrollment was 49,000 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 19,000.

Carroll Cobb New SBDC Director - Monday, May 17, 2010
Carroll Cobb has been named the Director of the Galveston County Small Business Development Center. Carroll brings more than 15 years of management, administrative, and consulting experience to the job. Carroll has a bachelors degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Georgia and a Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of South Carolina.
Carroll worked as Section Chief-Legal Division for the F.D.I.C. and was founder and President of DocuSearch, Inc. a privately held litigation support service company with offices in three states.
Carroll's knowledge and many years of business experience will greatly enhance the Galveston County SBDC ability to assist new and existing businesses.
